The Fitted Rigging House

Buxton are delighted to have been appointed the main contractor to complete the Shell and Core of the Grade I listed Fitted Rigging House for the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (CHDT)

Built in 1793 for The Royal Navy during 'The age of sail' The building was originally used as a rigging and storehouse, the magnificent Georgian building has remained relatively unchanged, but more recently has become under-utilised.

The CHDT has received Heritage Lottery Funding to restore the building to create commercial office space, a new volunteer centre, conservation studios, workshops, teaching areas and the nationally important maritime document archive.

We will be creating new foyers and vertical circulation cores and constructing a significant Glulam staircase.

We will also be installing new mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including toilets and plant rooms and will fit out approx. 3600m2 of Category A standard designated commercial tenant space.

Many of the period features will be honestly restored and decorated which will be able to be enjoyed for future generations.
