Buxton delivered an extensive refurbishment, alteration, and extension project at 55–57 Great Portland Street for The Crown Estate.
Great Portland Street sits in the heart of the West End, linking Marylebone with Fitzrovia. The area is known for its mix of period buildings, independent shops, restaurants, and long-established pubs, and is a busy route for both pedestrians and traffic throughout the day. Its central location and historic streetscape make it a prominent part of this district.
The scheme focused primarily on the creation of new high-end residential apartments above, alongside a sensitive refurbishment of the Grade II listed George Public House at lower levels.
The residential element comprised three refurbished apartments finished to a high specification. Works included luxury kitchens and bathrooms, specialist joinery, and panelled doors, creating contemporary living spaces within the historic building fabric.
At ground and basement levels, works to the public house reinstated a number of lost or damaged period features. These included feature wall panelling, aged mirrors, and traditional plasterwork, helping to restore the character of the venue while upgrading the internal environment.
Externally, the façade, roof, and chimney stacks were refurbished. Full access scaffolding was erected and a temporary roof installed to protect the building during the works.
Located in a busy part of the West End, the project required careful logistics planning due to high pedestrian footfall and restricted access. All vehicle movements and deliveries were tightly controlled to maintain safety and minimise disruption to surrounding businesses and the public.
Buxton worked closely with the client and design team throughout to deliver the project to a high standard, balancing heritage requirements with modern residential expectations.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering mixed-use refurbishments in central London, combining high-end residential fit-out with sensitive heritage works and disciplined site management.
