Buxton delivered a new extension at Melrose SEN School in Mitcham for the London Borough of Merton, providing much-needed facilities for primary-age pupils with complex needs. The scheme created new classroom accommodation and breakout spaces, alongside a new sports hall and kitchen, which are also shared with the adjacent secondary school. External works included a wildlife garden, multi-use play areas, and new car parking provision, alongside refurbishment to existing classrooms and catering areas. The project was delivered on a restricted live school site, accessed via a narrow shared lane serving two neighbouring schools. This required detailed logistics planning, strict safeguarding controls, and close coordination with school staff to ensure the school remained operational throughout. A strong emphasis was placed on pupil safety, with doors specifically designed to incorporate anti finger-trap protection, reducing the risk of injury in high-use areas. Melrose School forms part of Melbury College, a partnership of Merton’s specialist education services supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The new facilities strengthen this provision and provide modern, flexible learning environments tailored to specialist education. Alongside construction, Buxton supported the school community through social value initiatives, including a Christmas donation drive for pupils and families. This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering specialist education facilities within operational school environments, with a strong focus on safety, collaboration and community engagement.
