Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People – Care & Rehabilitation Centre, Leatherhead Buxton delivered construction works for the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People (QEF), a national charity supporting disabled children and adults to increase independence and achieve their potential. The centre near Leatherhead provides specialist neuro rehabilitation and complex care for people with acquired brain injuries, stroke, and neurological conditions. The purpose-built facility was designed with sustainability at its core. Passive environmental features were incorporated to reduce energy demand and improve internal comfort, including wind catchers that promote natural ventilation by drawing fresh air through the building and reducing reliance on mechanical cooling systems. The building also incorporates photovoltaic panels to generate renewable electricity on site, helping to lower operational carbon and running costs. Daylight optimisation, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient building services further support the centre’s long-term environmental performance. Internally, the centre provides fully accessible bedrooms, therapy spaces, gyms, and treatment rooms, all designed to support rehabilitation and recovery in a calm, dignified setting. Large windows and views to landscaped areas help create a bright, welcoming environment for residents and visitors. Buxton worked closely with QEF to ensure the building met the specialist needs of users, with careful coordination of structure, mechanical and electrical systems, and finishes throughout. Social value formed an important part of the project. The site team recycled timber pallets into usable items rather than sending them to waste, organised fundraising activities, and completed a large sponsored bike ride to raise money for charity. These initiatives reflected Buxton’s wider commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and giving back beyond the construction works. This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering healthcare and care-sector facilities that combine sustainable design, technical delivery, and meaningful social impact.
