Buxton delivered the Malthouse Performing Arts Centre for The King’s School, Canterbury, transforming a former 19th-century malting house, later used as a car garage, into a modern performance venue. The scheme created a 384-seat theatre with supporting accommodation including rehearsal spaces, dance studios, green rooms, dressing rooms, wardrobe and prop stores, together with full technical theatre infrastructure. A key objective was to retain and celebrate the building’s industrial heritage. Historic features were carefully reinstated, including lucams, referencing the original hoist openings used to move goods between floors. Malting turrets and ventilation features were also conserved or reintroduced, reflecting the building’s original function. Earlier window alterations were removed, with openings reduced to allow the installation of new windows sympathetic to the original proportions and character of the building. The entire structure was fully scaffolded, with a temporary roof installed to protect the building during works. Roofing works were carefully phased to maintain an active bat roost beneath the existing slate tiles, requiring specialist ecological controls. Original slate tiles were retained and reused wherever possible. Significant temporary works and structural interventions were required to form the theatre volume, including the selective removal of floors and retained cast-iron columns, all undertaken within a sensitive heritage setting. Major upgrades to mechanical and electrical services were delivered, including passenger lifts and specialist theatre lighting and audio systems, discreetly integrated to support modern performance requirements. The project was delivered within a highly constrained site, adjacent to railway infrastructure and occupied properties, requiring careful logistics planning and close coordination with stakeholders. The completed scheme has received national recognition, including RIBA and AJ Retrofit awards, reflecting the quality of design, conservation and delivery. This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex heritage refurbishments and adaptive reuse schemes, successfully bringing new cultural life to historic industrial buildings.
