Buxton delivered the extension and refurbishment of The Terrace Restaurant at ZSL London Zoo, located within the historic Regent’s Building in Regent’s Park.
The works involved demolition of the existing single-storey flat-roofed extension on the southern elevation, followed by the construction of a significantly larger replacement extension. Landscape improvements were also carried out to enhance the surrounding setting.
Internally, the restaurant layout was fully reorganised, supported by extensive mechanical and electrical installations to accommodate the increased operational demand.
As a result of the project, the restaurant’s capacity increased from approximately 240 to around 700 covers, making it one of Europe’s largest day-visitor restaurants.
The project was delivered within a live zoo environment, requiring careful management of logistics and visitor movement. Access was restricted and all deliveries were tightly scheduled around public opening hours. A 52-metre concrete pump boom was used to place concrete safely and efficiently across the site, reducing vehicle movements within the zoo grounds.
Throughout the programme, the first-floor corporate venue remained fully operational, requiring careful phasing to ensure business continued as usual.
The completed venue was officially opened by Cheryl Baker of Bucks Fizz.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s ability to deliver large-scale hospitality projects within sensitive, high-footfall environments, underpinned by disciplined logistics planning and close stakeholder coordination.
