Buxton was appointed to demolish the existing facilities and construct a new state-of-the-art Music Centre at Trinity School for The Whitgift Foundation. The new building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and provides a significant enhancement to the school’s music provision. The centre includes 17 individual acoustic practice rooms, a dedicated choir room, and a large rehearsal and recital hall at the heart of the development. Supporting accommodation includes recording studios linked directly to the practice rooms, music ICT suites, a Steinway piano suite with specialist teaching rooms, and dedicated spaces for percussion, drum kit and woodwind. Acoustics were a fundamental driver of the design and delivery. Buxton worked closely with specialist acousticians to achieve precise performance standards throughout the building. The practice rooms were formed using off-site manufactured acoustic pods, providing consistent sound isolation and acoustic control. Within the main hall, carefully positioned acoustic diffusers near the stage scatter sound evenly across the audience, while absorption panels behind and beside the seating control late reflections. Bespoke baffles and wall treatments were installed to fine-tune reverberation times, and the seating was selected to replicate human sound absorption, ensuring consistent acoustic behaviour whether the hall is full or empty. Mechanical systems were designed with acoustics in mind, with engineered ventilation strategies to prevent noise ingress and vibration isolation measures applied to plant equipment to avoid structure-borne sound transfer. The hall was acoustically tuned primarily for piano recital performance while retaining flexibility for orchestral rehearsals and ensemble work. The works were delivered on a fully occupied school site, requiring strict safeguarding procedures and carefully managed logistics. Noise-intensive activities were programmed around lessons and exam periods, with phased handover allowing early access to key spaces. Trinity School is recognised for its outstanding music department and performance opportunities, with a highly active choir and extensive co-curricular programme supporting musical engagement and achievement across the school. The completed facility is now a major asset to the campus, supporting concerts, rehearsals and teaching at a professional standard. The project demonstrates Buxton’s expertise in delivering technically demanding acoustic buildings within live educational environments.
