Buxton delivered the refurbishment and renovation of 12 Claremont in Hastings on behalf of Hastings Commons Neighbourhood Ventures Ltd, giving new life to a prominent historic building next to the town library and supporting community-led regeneration of the White Rock area.
Built in 1870, the building was originally known as the Claremont Rooms and has served many purposes over its lifetime. Uses have included a public meeting venue, an engraving studio, Hastings’ first telephone exchange, and later auction rooms. This layered history gives the building a strong civic identity and makes it well suited to its new role as a creative and collaborative space.
The project focused on sensitive refurbishment of the existing structure, retaining historic fabric while adapting the building for modern community use. The completed scheme provides an inclusive creative hub, with a gallery run by neurodiverse collective Project Art Works on the ground floor, alongside creative workspaces and learning areas across upper floors.
Significant mechanical and electrical works were carried out to bring the building up to modern standards for accessibility and occupation, while heritage elements were carefully conserved under the direction of conservation architects Purcell.
Social value formed part of delivery. Buxton’s site team supported the Hastings Food Bank through donations, helping families in need within the local community.
The project also achieved an excellent Considerate Constructors Scheme score of 43 out of 45, reflecting high standards of site management, community engagement and environmental care.
