Buxton was appointed to transform a six-storey, Grade II listed building at 126 Harley Street, completing the conversion of a former medical premises into four high-end residential apartments for The Howard de Walden Estate. Harley Street itself is one of London’s most historic and prestigious streets, originally developed in the 18th century and long associated with private medical practice and professional residences under the stewardship of the Howard de Walden Estate. Our works involved extensive internal refurbishment and reconfiguration. After a comprehensive strip-out, we carried out partial demolition, structural alterations and underpinning, including lowering the basement level to maximise usable space. All mechanical and electrical services were fully renewed and upgraded to meet modern standards. Externally, a new roof was installed; existing floors were stabilised and all windows were carefully renovated. The brickwork was cleaned and re-pointed to respect the building’s heritage character, and traditional lime plaster was applied to internal walls, with fibrous plaster mouldings reinstated on ceilings to reflect the building’s period quality. The fit-out of the apartments was delivered to a high specification, featuring quality kitchens, bathrooms, panelled doors and bespoke joinery throughout. Two of the apartments are single-level and two are duplex, offering a range of layouts tailored for luxury residential use. Located within the Smithfield and Marylebone Conservation Area, Harley Street’s terraces embody Georgian and early Victorian architecture that has long attracted professionals and specialists, particularly in medicine. The careful restoration and sensitive adaptation of 126 Harley Street respects this historic context while providing contemporary living standards.
