Overview

Aldershot Crematorium is a modernised crematorium and memorial gardens facility in Aldershot, Hampshire, serving local communities including Aldershot, Farnborough and wider surrounding areas. Buxton Building Contractors was appointed to deliver a major refurbishment for Rushmoor Borough Council. The works improved the fabric, technical performance and accessibility of the existing building while supporting the Council’s broader commitments to sustainability and community benefit. The refurbishment included the installation of a second fully abated cremator, replacement of the roof and external cladding, extension of the covered entrance and improved access for people with disabilities. New insulation and solar panels were incorporated to improve energy performance in line with the Council’s climate change objectives. The completed refurbishment has modernised a key community facility, improved accessibility and environmental performance, and strengthened connections between the project and its local context. Aldershot Crematorium demonstrates Buxton’s capability to deliver technical building upgrades while embedding social value across workforce, supply chain and community engagement.

SOCIAL VALUE During delivery, Buxton ensured the project generated measurable social value for the local area. The team sought local trades and suppliers in Aldershot and the surrounding area to strengthen the regional supply chain and support local businesses. Buxton donated materials to Aldershot College to support practical learning opportunities for students entering construction. Staff and representatives from the project also engaged with students at Alderwood Senior School’s careers fair and other local events to promote careers in the built environment and inspire the next generation of tradespeople. Buxton made a charitable donation to the Aldershot Community Grubhub, a local initiative providing essential food support and community services, reflecting a wider commitment to giving back where it is needed.

Buxton’s involvement extended into the community beyond formal construction activities. The team supported work at Tice’s Meadow, contributing volunteer time and practical resource to improve a local green space valued by residents. These activities reflect Buxton’s broader approach to social value, emphasising community engagement, skills development, local economic support and charitable contribution alongside project delivery.
