Buxton was appointed to deliver refurbishment and extension works at Avenue Primary School, improving facilities while the school remained fully operational.
The project involved the removal of outdated accommodation and the creation of new, modern teaching spaces. Works included internal alterations to improve layouts, new finishes throughout, and upgrades to classrooms and circulation areas. Extensive mechanical and electrical installations were also carried out to improve lighting, comfort and building performance.
The scheme was delivered in phases, allowing the school to continue operating safely throughout. Strict safeguarding measures were implemented, with segregated work zones, controlled access routes, and close coordination with staff to manage pupil movement during the school day.
A key part of the project was Buxton’s engagement with pupils through Buxton Bear, who played an important role in promoting site safety awareness. Buxton Bear regularly visited the school to help explain construction risks in a child-friendly way, reinforcing messages about staying clear of works areas and understanding basic site safety. This helped pupils feel involved in the project while maintaining a strong focus on wellbeing and protection.
External works complemented the internal improvements, helping to create a welcoming and functional environment for staff and pupils.
The project was completed successfully and handed back in time for continued use by the school, with positive engagement from both staff and students throughout the programme.
This scheme demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering primary school projects on live sites, combining careful planning, safeguarding, and meaningful community engagement.
