Buxton was appointed to deliver the Centenary Hall and Music School at Benenden School, an independent boarding school for girls set within the Hemsted Park estate in Kent. The project comprised the construction of a major new performance and teaching facility, including a large concert and assembly hall, a dedicated recital space, and a suite of music teaching, rehearsal and practice rooms. The new building provides modern accommodation to support both academic and co-curricular music provision across the school. Internally, the scheme includes specialist acoustic treatments, performance lighting, backstage facilities, green rooms and storage, together with full mechanical and electrical services designed to support a professional-standard performance environment. The works were delivered within a live school campus, requiring careful logistics planning, controlled access arrangements and close coordination with school staff to maintain safeguarding and minimise disruption to pupils and boarding operations. Alongside the main works, Buxton maintained strong engagement with the school community. This included fundraising and wellbeing initiatives, such as the Buxton Bear charity challenge. The project also supported staff development, with Brad, one of Buxton’s younger Quantity Surveyors, gaining valuable project experience on site as part of his professional development. The completed facility has significantly enhanced the school’s ability to host concerts, assemblies and large-scale performances, providing a long-term investment in the school’s cultural and educational offer. This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex education buildings, combining specialist performance requirements with robust site management in sensitive operational environments.
