Buxton were proud to be awarded a second contract by Babcock International Group for Brompton Barracks South Block Phase 2, located within the historic grounds of the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) in Chatham. The project formed the final phase of planned lifecycle works and involved the refurbishment of House E, along with the adjoining end houses, known as Houses 13 and 14. These buildings form part of a Grade II* listed accommodation block, requiring a sensitive and considered approach to preserve the fabric and character of the historic structure. Works included the full replacement of building services and internal finishes, alongside new fitted furniture, sanitaryware, lighting, power outlets, and kitchen equipment. Mechanical and electrical upgrades were a key part of the scheme, including the installation of new extract and ventilation systems to improve performance and occupant comfort. Additional works comprised door repairs and refurbishment, sash window overhauls, stone repairs, damp proofing, and the introduction of upgraded access control systems to meet modern security requirements. The project was delivered within a live military environment, with strict security protocols and access restrictions in place at all times. Close coordination with the client and site stakeholders was essential to manage permissions, movement of operatives, and material deliveries, ensuring all activities complied with security procedures while maintaining programme. This scheme demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering complex refurbishment works within sensitive, operational environments. The project required careful planning, strong attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to successfully complete works on a heritage asset within an active military establishment.
