New Build

Buxton delivered the extension to Bushey Cemetery, a highly sensitive scheme expanding one of the UK’s most significant Jewish burial grounds. The works provide new burial capacity alongside ceremonial and support buildings, carefully integrated within the Green Belt landscape.
At the heart of the development are two rammed earth prayer halls, formed from substantial structural walls rising to around seven metres. Rammed earth was selected for both its symbolic and environmental qualities, creating a direct connection between the building fabric and the surrounding landscape. The material reflects the tradition of returning to the earth, while offering strong thermal mass and inherent acoustic performance.
Construction of the rammed earth walls was undertaken with specialist input from Earth Structures Group in Australia, who supported the development of the mix design and construction methodology. Locally sourced soils were combined with minimal stabiliser, significantly reducing embodied carbon when compared with conventional construction methods.
The site presented complex logistical and engineering challenges. A temporary Bailey bridge was installed to provide site access while avoiding a live gas main, allowing construction traffic and materials to cross safely without disrupting essential services. This solution enabled works to proceed efficiently while managing risk within a constrained and sensitive environment.
Buxton coordinated the delivery of the ceremonial buildings, ancillary accommodation, processional routes and landscaping, alongside sustainable drainage measures and biodiversity enhancements across the site.
The scheme received wide professional recognition and was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize, reflecting the quality of the design and the careful execution of the works.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering complex, sustainability-led construction, combining specialist materials, innovative temporary works and sensitive site management within a culturally and environmentally significant setting.
