Refurbishment, New Build

Camden Centre for Learning is a specialist secondary education facility in the London Borough of Camden, providing education for pupils aged 11 to 16 with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Buxton Building Contractors delivered the construction and refurbishment of two historic school sites, Agincourt House and Chalcot School, to increase capacity and provide modern, purpose-built learning environments.
The project combined new build and refurbishment works across both sites. At Chalcot School, the works included internal reorganisation and fit out to create modern teaching spaces, a small extension to the existing entrance building, landscape improvements, widened vehicle access and the introduction of separate pedestrian routes. At Agincourt House, the scheme involved extensive internal reconfiguration and the construction of two new wing extensions, one providing general classrooms and the other specialist multi-agency accommodation. These works almost doubled the existing floor area.
Both sites are located within busy inner-city residential areas and a conservation area, requiring careful logistics planning and close management of access and safety. Works were delivered adjacent to occupied buildings, with communal areas, roads and entrances kept clear of construction traffic. Deliveries were tightly controlled and coordinated daily, with particular sensitivity at the Agincourt House site due to its proximity to the London Ambulance Centre on a constrained one-way route.
The project was delivered for the London Borough of Camden with a strong focus on long-term performance and user experience. BSRIA Soft Landings were applied, with Buxton’s aftercare team actively involved through handover and early occupation to support staff training, fine tuning and seasonal commissioning.
Camden Centre for Learning demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex education projects in constrained urban settings, combining refurbishment and new build works, careful logistics management and a collaborative approach to support the needs of pupils, staff and the wider community.
