Buxton delivered the alteration and refurbishment of existing dining, kitchen and ancillary spaces at Charterhouse School in Godalming to create the Oak Café — a new central dining and social facility forming part of the school’s core campus. Charterhouse is one of England’s oldest and most prestigious independent boarding and day schools, founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 and educating students aged 13–18 within a campus of significant historic buildings. The works comprised the alteration and refurbishment of the existing dining room, kitchen, storage areas, WCs and offices to form a flexible café servery, contemporary dining spaces, a new kitchen with ancillary support areas and offices. These elements created a more informal campus dining environment that complements the school’s traditional refectory facilities. Prior to the fit-out, enabling works were carried out that included expert masonry and stonework alterations in the cloisters and courtyard. Specialist masons worked to carefully dismantle and reinstate stone elements, preserving historical fabric while accommodating the new openings, circulation improvements and daylighting strategies planned as part of the café conversion. The Oak Café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for pupils and staff, and also operates as a daytime café for visitors, with an open-plan layout that takes advantage of natural light through enlarged window openings and improved connections to surrounding courtyard spaces. Design collaboration with David Morley Architects ensured the intervention was sensitive to the surrounding Grade II listed buildings and the wider campus context, maintaining visual harmony with the historic cloisters and Scholars’ Court layout. Communal dining is an important part of Charterhouse life, and the new café provides a welcoming, light-filled space that enhances daily routines while respecting the school’s architectural heritage. This project demonstrates Buxton’s ability to deliver high-quality education sector refurbishments within sensitive historic environments, combining careful conservation of existing stone fabric with contemporary construction to meet the evolving needs of a vibrant campus community.
