Duke Street Church in Richmond-upon-Thames involved the refurbishment of a large existing auditorium to improve comfort, flexibility and technical performance. Buxton Building Contractors delivered the works in close collaboration with Studio Partington, whose approach focused on working with the strengths of the original 1960s space while making it more adaptable for a wider range of uses. The design intent was to retain the character and scale of the existing auditorium while improving how the space functions day to day. Internally, the works included the formation of a new stage and focal wall to improve sightlines and support different layouts. Seating at gallery level was replaced and reconfigured, and new mechanical and electrical services were installed to improve heating, ventilation and overall environmental performance. Allowance was made for modern lighting and audio-visual systems, enabling the space to support talks, performances and community events. Studio Partington worked closely with the wider design team to resolve structural, services, acoustic and fire requirements within the constraints of the existing building. The emphasis was on careful intervention rather than wholesale change, improving performance without losing the clarity of the original design. Externally, Buxton carried out significant envelope works to support the internal upgrades. These included replacement windows and curtain walling incorporating acoustic ventilation, along with reconstruction of the roof structure and coverings. A temporary roof was installed during the works to protect the building and allow the refurbishment to proceed safely. The completed project delivers a robust, flexible auditorium that balances respect for the original architecture with improved comfort, usability and long-term durability. It demonstrates Buxton’s experience in complex refurbishment projects requiring close coordination between contractor, architect and specialist consultants.
