Buxton was appointed to deliver the restoration of Eastgate House, a treasured Grade I listed Elizabethan landmark in the heart of Rochester, originally built in the 1590s for Sir Peter Buck. The building is closely associated with Charles Dickens and features in The Pickwick Papers and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The gardens also contain the Swiss chalet used by Dickens for writing.
The Heritage Lottery Funded project included essential repairs to the roof, windows and floors, alongside installation of new heating and lighting systems. Visitor access was significantly improved with a new lift to the upper floors and the reinstatement of a historic staircase removed more than a century ago, opening up areas previously inaccessible to the public.
Buxton worked closely with Medway Council and heritage stakeholders to sensitively restore the house, retaining its historic character while enabling modern public use. The building now hosts exhibitions and community activity, celebrating over 400 years of history.
David Bean, Contracts Manager at Buxton, commented:
“On a personal level, I was honoured to work on such a magnificent building. As a company, we were delighted to collaborate with all stakeholders to restore Eastgate House so it retains its wonderful character and historic significance for future generations.”
