Buxton delivered the Elizabeth Twining Almshouses for The Richmond Charities, providing five fully wheelchair-accessible homes built to Passivhaus standards. The scheme expands the charity’s almshouse portfolio from 145 to 162 homes, continuing its nearly 400-year tradition of supporting people over 65 in financial need.
Sustainability was central to the design and construction. The homes incorporate ground source heat pumps, underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), achieving high levels of energy efficiency, comfort and low running costs. Particular focus was placed on airtightness and thermal performance to meet certified Passivhaus criteria. A full sprinkler system was also installed to enhance resident safety.
Buxton’s site team achieved Passive House Tradesperson certification, demonstrating strong technical capability in low-energy construction. The project is also listed on the Passive House Database as a verified low-energy development.
The scheme was delivered on a highly constrained former garage site, located between the rear gardens of neighbouring properties. Careful logistics planning and regular communication with residents were essential to minimise disruption throughout the works.
As part of knowledge sharing and social value delivery, Buxton hosted a Passivhaus educational workshop, providing insight into sustainable construction methods and building performance.
The project’s ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Mollie King, British singer and BBC Radio 1 presenter, best known as a member of The Saturdays. On completion, the development was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, who met residents and stakeholders to mark the project’s success.
The Elizabeth Twining Almshouses reflect Buxton’s commitment to sustainable, accessible housing that delivers long-term social value for the community.
