Refurbishment
Ref:

Buxton was appointed by English Heritage to deliver new build and refurbishment works to the visitor facilities at Eltham Palace.
The scope included the partial demolition of an existing glasshouse, alterations to the bothy, repairs and re-glazing to retained structures, and the construction of a new purpose-built Visitor Centre. Associated external works included the extension of the South Car Park and improvements to access and circulation.
The new Visitor Centre provides modern facilities to improve the visitor experience, while being carefully integrated into the historic parkland setting. The design balances contemporary requirements with sensitivity to the wider heritage environment.
Eltham Palace remained open to the public throughout the works, requiring careful sequencing and strict segregation between construction activity and visitors. Safe routes were maintained at all times, with logistics planned to minimise disruption to daily operations.
English Heritage commented on the high standard of workmanship and the pride taken by the site team in delivering the scheme.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering commercial new build and refurbishment projects within live heritage estates, combining careful planning with high-quality construction.
