Buxton completed the shell and core refurbishment of the Grade I listed Fitted Rigging House at Chatham Historic Dockyard, appointed by the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (CHDT). Built in 1793 during the Age of Sail as a Royal Navy rigging store, the magnificent Georgian building had remained largely unchanged but had become under-used in recent years. With Heritage Lottery Funding the project restored it into active use for commercial office space, a volunteer centre, conservation studios, workshops, teaching areas and the nationally important maritime document archive. The works included new entrance foyers, vertical circulation cores and a striking glulam staircase. Buxton installed modern mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including plant rooms and toilets, and delivered approximately 3,600 m² of Category A commercial tenant space. Buxton also delivered meaningful social value. We welcomed Oliver Creed for a week’s work experience, during which he toured the Fitted Rigging House works alongside other sites, gained insight into site procedures and heritage construction, and engaged with the team throughout his placement. The project has been recognised within the heritage sector for its sensitive reuse of a nationally significant building. Many period features were carefully conserved and redecorated so this historic asset can be enjoyed by future generations.
