Refurbishment

Buxton completed internal refurbishment works at Guildford Cathedral, delivering sensitive restoration within this historic Grade II* listed place of worship. The project focused on the removal of aged acoustic plaster from the vaulted ceilings, re-decoration of internal finishes and careful cleaning of existing Ashlar stonework throughout the nave. Our team managed asbestos removal in affected areas and installed new finishes while the cathedral remained open; visitors were able to walk around designated areas and observe the works in progress. The works required meticulous organisation and project management. Extensive pyramid scaffolding was erected across the nave, supported by steel beams hung from the columns, to enable safe access for decoration, plastering and installation of new lighting. To improve accessibility, a platform lift and external ramp were constructed at the north-east entrance, with an additional ramp at the west entrance. New brickwork was laid in monk bond to match the cathedral’s existing fabric. During the programme, Buxton hosted two open days for the public and took part in a charity abseil, demonstrating our commitment to community engagement alongside technical delivery.
