Buxton delivered the construction of Guildford Crematorium, a new purpose-built facility for Guildford Borough Council designed to replace the former crematorium and provide modern, flexible facilities for bereaved families and the local community. The scheme includes a chapel accommodating approximately 135 seated mourners with additional standing space, landscaped memorial gardens, reflection spaces and associated support areas. The overall design creates a calm, dignified setting for services, with courtyards, planting and water features integrated into the landscape to support tranquillity and reflection. Buxton’s works covered all stages of construction, from groundworks and structural build-up to internal finishes and the installation of extensive mechanical and electrical services required to support the facility’s sensitive operational demands. The crematorium was delivered with careful attention to sequencing and temporary facilities to maintain services throughout the programme. An important element of the back of house infrastructure was the supply and commissioning of the cremation equipment and abatement plant. A specialist manufacturer was appointed to design, supply, install and commission the cremators and associated abatement systems, ensuring compliance with current industry standards and environmental regulations, including DEFRA guidance. The long-term supply and maintenance arrangement was established with the local authority to support ongoing operation and performance. The completed facility has been widely recognised for both its architectural quality and its contribution to civic life. Guildford Crematorium was awarded a RIBA National Award as well as the RIBA South East Building of the Year Award, affirming excellence in design and build. This scheme demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex civic and community buildings, where technical building systems, sensitive use requirements and high expectations for finish and environment are successfully balanced.
