Buxton was appointed to deliver the new Hemel Hempstead Crematorium, a purpose-built facility serving the communities of West Hertfordshire. The single-storey crematorium provides a dedicated chapel, alongside associated support spaces for services, administration and staff. The building sits within a landscaped setting, with memorial gardens, meadow areas and woodland planting creating a calm, reflective environment for families and visitors. A new entrance forecourt and car parking were also delivered to support funeral services and visitor circulation. Construction required careful coordination of logistics and access while maintaining sensitivity to the surrounding parkland setting. The building was designed to balance functional requirements with a respectful architectural approach, creating a dignified space for remembrance. Sustainability formed an important part of the project. As part of Buxton’s internal sustainability photo competition, the site team created a hibernaculum using fallen trees found on site. This natural habitat encourages amphibians, insects and small mammals, helping to promote biodiversity and support local wildlife. Rather than removing the timber, it was repurposed to deliver long-term environmental benefit. This initiative reflects Buxton’s wider commitment to environmental responsibility, demonstrating how small site actions can contribute positively to biodiversity and sustainable construction practices. This project showcases Buxton’s experience delivering sensitive community infrastructure, combining high-quality construction with a considered approach to sustainability and landscape integration.
