Buxton was appointed to deliver the transformation of a former vehicle body shop into a purpose-built sports centre for The King’s School, Canterbury – one of the oldest and most respected schools in the world, with origins dating back to AD 597. The school has a long-standing sporting tradition, including a highly regarded fencing programme with a strong competitive record. The project involved stripping the existing structure back to its steel frame, followed by full re-cladding of the building envelope. New blockwork was installed, along with high-performance windows and doors to improve thermal performance and daylighting. A complete replacement of mechanical and electrical services was undertaken to support the new use of the building. Externally, a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was constructed, providing additional outdoor sporting provision. Internally, specialist sports flooring was installed throughout the main hall, alongside new changing and welfare facilities designed to accommodate high user volumes and performance sport. The sports hall has been designed as a genuinely multi-functional arena, with marked court layouts for five-a-side football, badminton and basketball. However, the primary focus of the facility is fencing, reflecting the school’s established strength in the sport. The centre features 18 international-standard fencing pistes, placing it among the largest dedicated school fencing facilities in the UK. The scale and quality of the space support daily training as well as competitive events, helping to sustain the school’s reputation for fencing excellence and national-level success. The specialist sports floor system was selected to meet the specific performance requirements of fencing, providing the correct balance of grip, shock absorption and durability, while remaining suitable for multi-sport use. This project follows Buxton’s earlier work at the nearby Malthouse Theatre, where we delivered the conversion of a historic malthouse building into a contemporary performing arts venue. Together, the two projects form part of the wider regeneration of the Malthouse site, supporting both cultural and sporting activity. The completed sports centre now provides a modern, flexible environment for pupils, clubs and community users, while enabling high-level fencing in a purpose-built setting.
