Refurbishment
Ref:

Buxton was appointed to refurbish and refit the café at Marble Hill Coach House as part of the wider Marble Hill Revived programme, led by English Heritage. The project forms part of the long-term restoration and revitalisation of Marble Hill House and its surrounding historic parkland in Twickenham.
Marble Hill House is an 18th-century Palladian villa built for Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, a close companion of King George II. The estate was designed as a fashionable riverside retreat, with landscaped grounds extending towards the Thames. The Grade II listed coach house and stable block originally served the main house, housing horses, carriages, and estate staff who supported daily life at the villa.
Our works focused on the careful restoration and adaptation of this former coach house and yard. The historic fabric of the building was retained and repaired, while new café and visitor facilities were sensitively introduced to support its new public use. The refurbishment balanced conservation with modern requirements, integrating contemporary services and fittings without compromising the character of the original structure.
Throughout the works, Buxton maintained safe access to the residential accommodation located on the upper floors. Detailed phasing and coordination ensured residents could continue to use the building safely while construction activities were undertaken below.
The completed café now provides a welcoming destination for visitors using the park and riverside walks, encouraging people to spend longer at the estate. It plays an important role in supporting the wider regeneration of Marble Hill, improving visitor facilities while respecting the historic character of the former coach house and its setting.
