Buxton Building Contractors were appointed by Guildford Borough Council to deliver a residential development at New Road, Gomshall, transforming a constrained village site into 27 high-quality new homes. The scheme forms part of the council’s wider commitment to providing much-needed affordable housing while responding sensitively to the character of the surrounding area. Due to limited access and the close proximity of neighbouring properties, the project required careful planning and sequencing throughout. Our team worked closely with the client, consultants, and local stakeholders to minimise disruption, maintain safety, and ensure the smooth delivery of the works from start to finish. Ecology played a key role in the project, with surveys confirming the presence of slow worms, a native reptile protected under UK wildlife legislation. In response, Buxton implemented a robust mitigation strategy in line with specialist ecological advice. This included controlled vegetation clearance under supervision and the careful relocation of slow worms to a suitable receptor area, providing appropriate habitat for their long-term protection. Additional safeguards were introduced on site, supported by toolbox talks to ensure all operatives understood their responsibilities. This proactive approach ensured full compliance while protecting local biodiversity. The quality of the completed development was recognised at the Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards, where New Road, Gomshall was named a finalist for Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development and received a Highly Commended award in the Best High Volume New Housing Development category. These accolades reflect the high standards of workmanship, regulatory compliance, and collaborative working achieved throughout the project. The finished scheme delivers well-designed, energy-efficient homes that support local housing needs and contribute positively to the village environment. The project demonstrates Buxton’s commitment to responsible construction, combining technical excellence with strong environmental stewardship.
