Buxton delivered the new build residential development Northgate Square (Bridgefield House) on an existing car park site adjacent to Central Sussex College in Crawley town centre. The scheme forms part of Crawley Borough Council’s wider commitment to provide high-quality affordable housing for local residents.
The piled, reinforced concrete frame building rises to eight storeys with two cores and provides a total of 98 residential units. These comprise 33 one-bed, 60 two-bed and five three-bed apartments, offering a mix of sizes to suit different household needs.
The scheme is located a short distance from the town centre, giving residents easy access to shops, leisure facilities and transport links while contributing to the regeneration of Crawley’s Northgate neighbourhood, one of the town’s original New Town districts.
As part of the development, Buxton delivered associated hard and soft landscaping, resident car parking and secure bicycle storage, enhancing the overall setting and supporting sustainable travel options.
Northgate Square plays a key role in meeting local housing need. The building contains a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership homes, supporting residents at different stages of the housing ladder.
During the build, Buxton also engaged with the local community and education partners. A hoarding competition was run with Central Sussex College, promoting STEM subjects and supporting student resources. Training opportunities were provided on site, including the placement of a trainee site supervisor, reinforcing Buxton’s commitment to skills development and social value.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s capability to deliver large-scale, high-density affordable housing in town centre locations, combining robust structural delivery, quality resident amenities and meaningful community engagement.
