New Build

Buxton delivered the Penguin Beach project within the live operational environment of London Zoo, one of the UK’s most visited attractions. The works were carefully managed to maintain public access, visitor safety, and animal welfare throughout the programme. The project included the construction of a new penguin habitat with a significantly enlarged pool and underwater viewing areas, alongside a purpose-built demonstration space with covered seating. An extension to the existing shop was also delivered, incorporating a new refreshment kiosk and dedicated milkshake bar, together with a new exit route directly into Regents Park to improve visitor flow. A planning condition required the retention and relocation of a historic arch and plaque from the former parrot house. These were carefully removed, preserved, and reinstated close to the new pool, ensuring an important piece of the zoo’s heritage was retained within the new exhibit. The scheme attracted significant interest during construction, with regular site tours from zoo stakeholders and visitors. Feedback throughout the build was consistently positive, with strong recognition of both the pace of progress and the quality of workmanship. External works accounted for the majority of the scheme, making groundworks and landscaping a critical element of delivery. Close coordination across the supply chain ensured high standards were maintained throughout. Logistics were tightly controlled due to restricted access and constant visitor footfall. All deliveries were scheduled around opening hours, with pre-approved vehicle movements, 24-hour security, and just-in-time delivery planning. Strict controls were maintained around noise, dust, and vibration, with clear segregation between public areas and construction zones at all times. The new gift shop was completed three weeks ahead of programme. Designed to be highly glazed, it benefits from excellent natural daylight and a continuous rooflight, with views across the site and into Regents Park. This project demonstrates Buxton’s ability to deliver complex construction works within a live public environment, combining disciplined logistics, strong stakeholder collaboration, and a consistent focus on quality.
