Pickering House is a purpose-designed nursing home in Dorking, Surrey, delivered for The Journalists’ Charity. The scheme provides specialist nursing and personal care accommodation for up to 20 older residents, including those living with dementia. All bedrooms are en-suite and arranged to maximise outlook over the landscaped gardens, creating a calm and dignified environment for residents. Shared facilities include a library, chapel and a range of communal lounges, supporting social interaction and wellbeing.
The building was designed to balance the practical requirements of a modern care facility with a sensitive architectural response to its semi-rural setting. Externally, the materials palette combines zinc roofing and rainwater goods with through-coloured render, timber cladding and brickwork. This approach delivers a durable, low-maintenance finish while responding to the character of the surrounding area. A distinctive cylindrical entrance space forms a welcoming focal point, accommodating dining and sitting areas at the heart of the building.
A key challenge was increasing resident capacity while protecting the quality of the site, particularly the established gardens to the south. The project sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, requiring a considered planning strategy and careful integration into the landscape. The final design successfully balances scale, function and context, delivering a high-quality care environment that prioritises resident comfort and long-term usability.
