The Queen’s Head Public House is a high-end residential and mixed-use development in Chelsea, delivered within the Chelsea Conservation Area. Buxton Building Contractors was appointed to carry out the retention and renovation of the principal pub façades, with comprehensive redevelopment of the structure behind to create new residential accommodation and extended public house space.
The scheme involved the retention of the main pub façades on two elevations, supported by extensive temporary works including piled foundations, steel flying shores and a site tower to stabilise the structure during demolition and reconstruction. The remainder of the building was removed, allowing the construction of new basement and ground floor extensions to the public house and the conversion of the upper levels to high-quality residential apartments. The scheme also incorporated 1a Elystan Place and the full redevelopment of 25 Tryon Street to form a new private house with basement accommodation.
The project required careful sequencing due to the restricted site and the proximity of neighbouring occupied buildings. Structural steelwork was erected in phases using craned MEWPs, followed by new concrete floor construction and completion of the superstructure. A new basement and lightwell were formed, requiring significant temporary works and close control of ground conditions.
Internally, the residential accommodation was finished to a high standard, with bespoke joinery, premium materials and careful attention to detail throughout. Finishes were selected to reflect the expectations of a prime Chelsea location, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, alignment and build quality.
The site was designated as an Asset of Community Value and remained within a busy residential setting throughout the works. Buxton maintained regular communication with neighbours, issued advance notice of disruptive activities and tightly controlled deliveries to minimise noise and congestion.
The Queen’s Head Public House demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex high-end residential schemes involving façade retention, significant temporary works and premium internal finishes within sensitive conservation settings.
