Buxton was honoured to deliver the Hidden Treasures – Fresh Expressions project at Rochester Cathedral, a major Heritage Lottery Funded conservation, access and interpretation scheme within one of England’s oldest medieval cathedrals. The £4.0 million programme included repairs to the library roof, a refurbished library interior and new strong room, installation of disabled lifts from the quire to the crypt, and works to unlock previously inaccessible historic spaces. The vestries were remodelled to create flexible music and education areas, and a new server room was formed within the crypt. As part of the wider works, new ferramenta was installed in the form of railings and window grilles, designed to complement the historic fabric of the cathedral while meeting modern safety and security requirements. Extensive archaeological investigation accompanied the programme, with specialists recording medieval and earlier remains beneath the cathedral, deepening understanding of the site’s long history and informing conservation decisions. The crypt was sympathetically renovated, with permanent exhibition space created in the older Norman section (circa 1080) to display treasures including the Textus Roffensis, one of Britain’s most significant medieval manuscripts. The completed scheme was marked by a royal visit from HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh (formerly Countess of Wessex), recognising the cultural and community importance of the project. Delivered in close collaboration with Rochester Cathedral and heritage partners, the project demonstrates Buxton’s experience in complex conservation, archaeological sensitivity and inclusive access delivery.
