Overview

Royal Russell School Junior School is a new-build education facility within the Royal Russell School campus in Croydon. Buxton Building Contractors Limited delivered a purpose-built junior school providing modern teaching accommodation designed around the needs of younger pupils, while carefully coordinating works within an active school environment. The scheme comprised the construction of a new school building providing classrooms, circulation space and supporting facilities, alongside associated landscaping and external works. The design incorporated high levels of glazing to maximise natural light and create a bright, welcoming learning environment. Installation of the glazed elements was carried out using a specialist glass-lifting robot, improving safety, precision and control when working within a constrained site and close to occupied areas. Works were carefully managed alongside the continued operation of the wider school campus. Safeguarding, access segregation and clear communication with staff remained central to the delivery approach, with logistics and sequencing planned to minimise disruption to school life. Regular visits from Buxton’s office team formed part of the project’s collaborative approach, supporting coordination between site and office, quality assurance and ongoing engagement with the client and design team throughout the construction process. Royal Russell Junior School demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering new-build education facilities within live campus settings, combining technical delivery, innovative construction methods and strong stakeholder engagement throughout the programme.

SOCIAL VALUE Throughout the project, the team supported a number of wider social value initiatives alongside the construction works. This included engagement with Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), helping promote wellbeing and open conversations around mental health across the project team and wider supply chain.

The project also supported sustainable waste management initiatives through segregation and recycling measures on site, including working with organisations such as Community Wood Recycling to divert suitable timber waste from landfill for reuse and recycling where possible.

In addition, the project created opportunities for engagement with pupils, staff and the wider school community through regular communication, site coordination and collaborative working within the live campus environment.
