Buxton delivered the conservation and refurbishment of Saltdean Lido, a Grade II* listed Art Deco building dating from 1938 and designed by R.W.H. Jones. Before works commenced, the structure had been largely closed and in poor condition, with long-term exposure to salt air causing serious deterioration to the reinforced concrete frame. Extensive structural repairs were therefore required to stabilise and secure the building. Externally, Buxton undertook major concrete breakout and repair works, alongside render repairs and the installation of new steel windows throughout, with some original windows refurbished where possible. Historic research guided the reinstatement of lost architectural features, helping to return the building to a character more in keeping with its original 1930s design. Internally, intrusive 1970s alterations were removed to reinstate the original layout. From what was effectively a stripped-back shell, Buxton formed new accommodation including event and function spaces, a gym, library, café and kitchen areas, community rooms, and new toilet facilities. All mechanical and electrical services were installed from scratch, with the building now operating as a fully electric facility, incorporating discreet ventilation systems to support modern use. Saltdean Lido is the only Grade II* listed lido in the UK and is widely regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the English Seaside”. The quality of the conservation works achieved national recognition, reflecting the technical complexity of the repairs and the careful approach taken throughout. Buxton’s scope of works related to the building fabric and internal accommodation and did not include the swimming pool. The scheme also supported skills development, with apprentices, including Josh, gaining valuable hands-on experience on a major heritage site.
