Overview

Set within the nationally important landscape of Scotney Castle, this project forms part of the National Trust's wider Reconnecting Scotney initiative, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The programme aims to improve visitor access while restoring and enhancing the estate's historic landscape. Buxton has been appointed to deliver the new year-round visitor car park and associated infrastructure works. The project includes the construction of the new car park together with new footpaths, drainage systems and extensive landscape works, creating the infrastructure needed to support the estate's long-term masterplan. Once complete, the new facilities will allow the existing visitor car park to be removed, enabling the historic orchard within the Walled Garden to be reinstated as part of the wider restoration of the estate. Working within a highly sensitive historic landscape requires careful planning and close collaboration with the wider consultant team. The design has been informed by ecological, arboricultural and archaeological investigations, ensuring that veteran trees, habitats and heritage assets are protected throughout construction. The estate remains open to visitors during the works, requiring the project to be delivered within a live public environment while maintaining safe access and minimising disruption to the visitor experience. The project reflects Buxton's experience of delivering complex infrastructure works within heritage settings, combining modern construction techniques with a careful approach to conservation, environmental protection and stakeholder management.
