Buxton delivered a complex refurbishment and reconfiguration project at St Helier Hospital, working within a fully operational healthcare environment. The works included the formation of a new Emergency Department, refurbishment of the paediatric department, and the creation of a new urgent care centre and out-of-hours unit, along with a new front entrance to improve patient flow and accessibility. The project involved demolition of existing partitions, asbestos removal, and significant modifications to existing mechanical and electrical services, alongside the installation of a new internal layout. All services remained live throughout the works, as the A&E department continued to operate on a 24/7 basis for the duration of the programme. Working within a live hospital environment required detailed planning and strict controls. Noise, dust, and vibration were carefully managed to minimise disruption to patients and clinical staff. Enhanced cleaning regimes, controlled access routes, and clear segregation between construction and hospital areas were maintained at all times to protect infection control standards. Deliveries and waste removal were tightly scheduled to avoid peak hospital activity, with close coordination between the site team and hospital operations to ensure patient safety and uninterrupted clinical services.
