Buxton delivered the £5 million restoration of St John’s Waterloo, a prominent London church and cultural venue, appointed as principal contractor. The works ran from July 2021 to spring 2022, revitalising the main nave for worship and performance while transforming the underused crypt into a vibrant community, arts and youth hub. The scheme created new facilities for The Bridge at Waterloo’s Waterloo Well programme, offices and rehearsal space for Southbank Sinfonia alumni, and support areas for the church’s shelter, including meeting rooms, counselling spaces, a kitchen and showers. A new entrance foyer was formed, acoustics and lighting were upgraded, and a baptistry and prayer space established near the main doors. Heritage features were carefully restored, including the murals by Hans Feibusch, reinstated as a central focal point. A new lift provides step-free access to the crypt, where the Long Room was converted into an events space. Additional works included new lavatories and storage facilities for grounds staff. The project was formally reopened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, marking a key milestone for the church and its community role. Buxton also hosted a company roadshow at St John’s following completion, using the space to bring teams together and showcase the successful transformation. Delivered in close collaboration with St John’s Waterloo and the wider design team, the project demonstrates Buxton’s experience in complex heritage refurbishment and community-focused regeneration.
