Buxton was appointed as principal contractor to deliver the restoration of the historic Walled Garden at Stanmer Park, part of one of Sussex’s most significant heritage landscapes on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Stanmer Park is an 18th-century estate centred around the Grade I listed Stanmer House and surrounded by a collection of listed structures, farmland and historic parkland. The wider regeneration scheme was led by Brighton & Hove City Council, supported by funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the aim of bringing this important public space back into active use while protecting its heritage value. Our works focused on the former kitchen garden serving Stanmer House, which had fallen into disrepair over many years. The project involved the careful restoration of the historic brick boundary walls using traditional materials and conservation techniques, preserving the character of the original structure while ensuring long-term durability. A series of former bothy buildings within the garden were refurbished and adapted to provide new learning and community spaces, supporting horticultural training and engagement. Buxton also delivered new visitor facilities, including a café extension and associated public amenities, helping to create a welcoming destination for park users. New accessible pathways and hard landscaping were introduced throughout the site, improving circulation and ensuring inclusive access for all visitors. Interpretation features and signage were also installed to tell the story of the garden and its role within the wider estate. Following completion, the Walled Garden reopened as One Garden Brighton – a vibrant public attraction combining ornamental and productive planting, event spaces, retail and hospitality. The site now also operates as a working educational campus for Plumpton College, providing hands-on training and learning opportunities in horticulture and land-based subjects. The project successfully blends heritage conservation with contemporary use, safeguarding an important historic asset while creating a thriving community space for Brighton and Hove. Today, One Garden Brighton is a popular destination for visitors, students and local residents, supporting education, wellbeing and sustainable landscape management within Stanmer Park.
