The Canons House and Grounds is a historic estate in Mitcham within the London Borough of Merton, centred on a Grade II* listed Georgian manor house set within landscaped parkland. Formerly a private residence, the site has been restored and reimagined as a shared community, cultural and heritage destination, providing spaces for visitors, events, work and creative activity. Buxton Building Contractors delivered the sensitive refurbishment and associated new works as part of this wider regeneration, returning an important historic site to long term public use. The works to the seventeenth century house focused on the careful conservation of significant historic fabric using traditional trades and specialist techniques. Masonry repairs were undertaken to stabilise and protect original brick and stonework. Decorative fibrous plasterwork was repaired and reinstated to match original profiles and detailing. Historic lincrusta, an embossed wall covering characteristic of the period, was carefully restored. Existing period sash windows were overhauled to retain original materials and operation, and specialist decorative work was carried out, including Trompe l’oeil paintings designed to look like windows, informed by surviving historic evidence. The wider estate includes a medieval dovecote, one of the oldest surviving structures within the grounds, which was conserved as part of the overall heritage setting. All works were guided by the listed status of the buildings and informed by historic research, with replacement materials selected only where repair was not possible and always on a like for like basis. Alongside the heritage refurbishment, Buxton delivered new visitor facilities to support the public use of the site. Steelwork for the new café extension to Madeira Hall was erected, followed by brickwork to form the new structure. Associated hard landscaping works were carried out adjacent to the building, improving access, circulation and external amenity for visitors. The completed site now provides a range of visitor and community facilities, including tea rooms, spaces for hire, exhibition areas and landscaped grounds for events and everyday use. The Canons House and Grounds operates as a living heritage site, combining conservation with active community and cultural use. The Canons demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering complex heritage projects where traditional craftsmanship, sensitive conservation and new construction are carefully balanced to secure long term use, public access and lasting community value.
