Buxton was appointed to deliver the restoration and refurbishment of the Great Hall at the Royal Masonic School for Girls, a historic independent boarding and day school in Hertfordshire.
The scope of works included roof repairs, stonework cleaning, and external façade repairs, alongside internal conservation works to restore the hall’s original character. Internally, works included repairs to decorative plasterwork, redecoration, and the careful refurbishment of existing finishes to protect historic detailing. Mechanical and electrical upgrades were also carried out to improve lighting and building performance while remaining sympathetic to the heritage setting.
The project was delivered within a fully occupied school environment. Strict safeguarding procedures were implemented, with controlled access routes, secure segregation between construction and pupil areas, and robust site security measures. Daily coordination with school staff ensured lessons and boarding life continued safely and without disruption.
Logistics were carefully managed, with timed deliveries, designated vehicle routes, and strict traffic controls to protect pupils, staff, and visitors. Noise, dust and vibration were closely monitored and controlled throughout the works.
Health and safety performance was a key focus. The project team’s standards were recognised internally through Buxton’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award, reflecting consistent compliance and proactive site management.
The refurbished Great Hall has been returned to full use as a central space for assemblies, performances and school events.
This project demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering heritage refurbishment projects within live education environments, balancing conservation requirements with strict safeguarding and operational constraints.
