Refurbishment
Ref:

Buxton was appointed to deliver works at Tonbridge School, one of the UK’s leading independent boys’ schools, to extend and refurbish the Smythe Library.
The project comprised a new entrance extension, providing a modern foyer, together with the construction of a new rear stair and lift core to improve circulation and accessibility. Alongside this, Buxton undertook the full refurbishment of the existing library, including the installation of specialist bespoke joinery and comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrades.
Originally designed in 1962 by Sir William Holford, the Smythe Library houses more than 23,000 volumes and provides a dedicated space for study, research and quiet reflection. Works were carefully planned to respect the building’s architectural character while introducing modern functionality and services.
The project was delivered within a live school environment, requiring detailed logistics planning, controlled access and close coordination with school staff to minimise disruption to teaching and daily operations.
The refurbished library was officially opened by HRH Princess Alexandra, marking the successful completion of the project.
This scheme demonstrates Buxton’s experience in delivering sensitive refurbishment and extension works within occupied educational settings, combining heritage awareness with modern building performance.
