Refurbishment

Buxton delivered the refurbishment of the historic Torridon Library building, now known as Corbett Community Library, alongside the construction of an extension to create a new children’s centre.
Originally opened in 1907 as a Carnegie Free Library, the building is Grade II listed and has served the local community for over a century. Following community-led efforts to protect its future, the library has been successfully re-established as a volunteer-run hub, providing both traditional library services and wider community activities.
Our works included repairs and repointing to the existing masonry, renewal of roof coverings and a comprehensive internal refurbishment to improve the condition and usability of the listed building. Careful attention was given to preserving historic fabric while upgrading the internal environment.
In parallel, a new extension was constructed to accommodate a children’s centre, providing dedicated space for early-years support services. The new accommodation was sensitively integrated with the existing building, improving connectivity between old and new spaces.
Delivering works within an occupied heritage building required careful planning, with logistics managed to maintain safe access and minimise disruption to library services wherever possible.
Today, Corbett Community Library operates as a valued community hub, supporting reading, learning and family services, while the children’s centre provides a base for early development programmes.
This scheme demonstrates Buxton’s experience delivering heritage refurbishment and community-focused extensions within sensitive urban settings.
