Heritage Projects

Buxton has a rich history of working on a diverse range of projects involving listed and historic buildings. Our extensive experience covers a wide spectrum, ranging from small-scale repairs and refurbishments to the complete reconstruction of dilapidated structures in tight, inner-city terraces and sprawling country estates.

Our team of experts possesses the requisite knowledge of specialist requirements, legislation, and construction methods needed for working on listed buildings. Their years of experience bring invaluable expertise to each project, ensuring that we deliver high-quality results. When working on listed and historic projects, we exercise great care to preserve and restore desirable features in close liaison with English Heritage and other authorities, even under archaeological watching briefs.

Given the sensitivity of listed work, close management and meticulous selection of specialist subcontractors are crucial to ensure a seamless process from start to finish. We are committed to achieving the highest level of quality required in line with the consent provided, irrespective of the size or scale of the project.

The project involved the removal of the acoustic plaster and subsequent re-decoration of the vaulted ceilings.

We removed asbestos from the affected areas and decorated the existing lime plaster walls whilst cleaning the existing Ashlar stonework at the same time.

The Cathedral remained open and activities continued to take place with visitors able to walk around designated areas to see the works being undertaken.

The project took excellent organisation and project management skills. ‘Pyramid’ scaffolding was erected to cover the whole ceiling to enable plastering, redecoration, and lighting to be installed,  this involved large steel beams being hung from the columns in the Nave to support the deck.

A platform lift and ramp were constructed outside the existing North East entrance, with a further ramp constructed to the west entrance.  ‘Monk bond’ brickwork was used to match the existing Cathedral brickwork.

During the works, we held two open days for the public and had great fun participating in a charity abseil.
