This week we welcomed 12-year-old Oliver to spend a day with his dad at Buxton Building Contractors, as part of his schools Enrichment Day experience and to see what a career in construction can look like.
Oliver began his day at our head office in Caterham, where he met our surveying department and learned how the team uses Bluebeam software to digitally take off quantities from drawings.
He then visited Royal Russell School, where Buxton is building a brand-new junior school designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’. Our Project Manager, Mat Constable, spent time showing Oliver around the site, explaining the different stages of construction and how each team plays a part in bringing the project together. The new building will include science labs, art and design studios, a library and other specialist teaching spaces.
In the afternoon, Oliver headed to London Zoo, where we’re working on the Gorilla Kingdom project. This exciting scheme is creating improved indoor and outdoor habitats for the gorillas, designed around conservation and animal welfare.
At the end of the day, Oliver also got to see the Land of the Lions and the Penguin Pool, both of which were built by Buxton in previous years.
He said he really enjoyed seeing how varied construction can be, from schools to zoos and everything in between.
At Buxton, we’re proud to help young people explore our industry through school visits, work experience and our apprentice programme, giving them a real look at the many paths a career in construction can offer.
