Roof Removal Marks Key Milestone for Newhaven Health Hub

The removal of the existing central pitched roof at the former Co-op building marks a major milestone in the development of the Newhaven Health Hub. It has been replaced with a new flat roof and three courtyard areas, supported by a new steel frame. The existing slab was reinforced with carbon fibre strips to support the additional load, and new drainage has been installed beneath to serve the future consultation rooms.

The two outer pitched roofs have had their old rafters removed and replaced with stronger ones. The existing steel frame has been repainted, and new sarking boards and breather membranes have been installed in preparation for a Rheinzink roof.

The existing pitched roof over the new gym has been removed and replaced with a steel frame and flat roof, ready to support photovoltaic panels. With the scaffold roof now removed from the former Co-op building, the remainder of the construction can progress.

This stage brings the project closer to realising a modern, multi-use community facility that will house two GP surgeries—Quayside Medical Practice and Chapel Street Surgery—a new pharmacy, co-working space for creative industries, and enhanced facilities for Wave Active’s Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre.

The former Co-op at 10 Newhaven Square is being fully refurbished for Quayside Medical Practice, featuring additional clinical rooms, new waiting areas, improved staff facilities, and a Changing Places facility accessible from the square. The former Peacocks unit (5–8 Newhaven Square) is being converted for Chapel Street Surgery, offering similar upgrades across both floors. A new pharmacy will open in the adjacent vacant unit at 9 Newhaven Square.

In addition, over 200 square metres of co-working space for creative organisations will be created, accessible from Chapel Street. Upgrades to Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre include a new shared entrance, an expanded gym, two new studios, and improved first-floor facilities.

The Newhaven Health Hub is set to become a vibrant centre for health, wellbeing, and creative enterprise in the heart of the town.
