A Milestone in Heritage Conservation and Community Engagement

We are pleased to share the news of the completed restoration of the Saltdean Lido, a significant Grade II* listed building celebrated for its Art Deco design and historical value along the English coast. This project, generously supported by National Lottery Heritage Funding, was undertaken with the dual goals of preserving the Lido’s unique architectural heritage and enhancing its role as a vibrant community resource. The comprehensive restoration has introduced a range of facilities, including an Art Deco-themed event space, an exercise studio, a library, a community hub, a café, and a heritage learning zone, all designed to secure the Lido’s future for many years to come.

The restoration process was a collaborative effort, involving close consultation with the community, heritage experts, and the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company. Key highlights of the project include the installation of a replica chimney and the iconic sign, both of which pay homage to the Lido’s original 1930s elegance, alongside modern improvements that ensure sustainability and accessibility for all visitors.

One of the more heartwarming stories from the project includes the temporary residence of a seagull family, which, in a way, symbolized nature’s nod of approval for our efforts to rejuvenate this historic site.

Looking ahead, the Saltdean Lido is poised to serve as a shining example of how heritage conservation can coexist with community revitalization and innovation in architectural restoration. We are immensely grateful for the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in this project, including our team at Buxton Building Contractors, the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, and the broader community, whose support and enthusiasm have been pivotal to our success.

The Lido is more than just a building; it is a symbol of community spirit, architectural preservation, and the successful collaboration between various stakeholders. We are proud to have played a role in this project and are excited to see the positive impact the restored Lido will have on the community and its visitors for generations to come.
