Buxton Building Contractors is pleased to welcome Harvey Browne, who has joined the business as a Trainee Estimator.

As Harvey begins his career in construction alongside his studies at Kingston University, we caught up with him to find out what attracted him to the industry, what he hopes to learn during his apprenticeship and his ambitions for the future.

What apprenticeship and role have you joined Buxton Building Contractors to undertake?

I have joined Buxton Building Contractors as a Trainee Estimator. My role involves supporting the estimating team with the pre-construction side of projects, giving me the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the early stages of a construction project.

What will your day-to-day role involve?

My day-to-day role will involve supporting the estimating team with tenders for projects that have yet to begin. This includes assisting with tender drawings, helping to establish the costs of different elements of a project and measuring quantities from drawings. This will allow me to develop a strong understanding of how projects are priced and prepared before construction begins.

Where will you be studying, and what qualification are you working towards?

I will be studying at Kingston University, working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying alongside my apprenticeship at Buxton.

What attracted you to a career in construction and to joining Buxton?

A career in construction was always something I was interested in. While working at Signature Care Homes, I met a retired Quantity Surveyor who inspired me to pursue a career in the industry. Hearing about his experience and understanding more about the role made me realise that Quantity Surveying aligned well with my interests.

Buxton felt like a great match for me because of its strong family-orientated culture and reputation within the construction industry. I am looking forward to working alongside highly skilled and experienced professionals who can support me and help me develop my career as an estimator.

What skills or experience are you hoping to gain during your apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship, I am excited to gain real hands-on experience and develop my knowledge by working alongside experienced professionals. I hope to build my understanding of estimating, improve my technical and commercial skills and gain a strong foundation that I can carry throughout my career.

What are your ambitions for your career once you complete your apprenticeship?

Once I complete my apprenticeship, I want to continue building my experience and work towards becoming a Senior Estimator. My ambition is to eventually work on larger and more complex projects, applying the knowledge and skills I have gained throughout my apprenticeship to my day-to-day role.

What are you most looking forward to about starting your career with Buxton?

I am most looking forward to gaining real-world experience, working on construction projects and learning from professionals who have extensive experience within the industry. I am excited to develop new skills, take on new challenges and build the foundations of a successful career with Buxton.

We are delighted to have Harvey on board and look forward to supporting him as he develops his skills, gains experience and progresses through his apprenticeship.
