Buxton Building Contractors is pleased to welcome Oliver Lawlor, who has joined the business as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

Alongside gaining practical experience with our commercial teams, Oliver will be studying for a degree in Quantity Surveying at Kingston University. We caught up with him to find out more about his new role, why he chose a career in construction and what he hopes to achieve in the years ahead.

What apprenticeship and role have you joined Buxton Building Contractors to undertake?

I have joined Buxton Building Contractors as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, where I will be developing my knowledge and experience within the construction industry while working towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor.

What will your day-to-day role involve?

My day-to-day role will involve supporting the Senior Quantity Surveyors and project team with the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects. This will give me the opportunity to gain practical experience and understand how projects are managed from both a commercial and construction perspective.

Where will you be studying, and what qualification are you working towards?

I will be studying at Kingston University, working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying alongside my apprenticeship at Buxton.

What attracted you to a career in construction and to joining Buxton?

I have always wanted to pursue a career in construction. Seeing how projects develop from nothing into something tangible has always been a big interest of mine, and a career in Quantity Surveying gives me the opportunity to see that process on a regular basis.

I was also attracted to Buxton because its focus on quality and teamwork aligns closely with my own values. There is also a great family feel within the company, which I believe will create a positive environment for me to learn, develop and gain experience alongside experienced professionals.

What skills or experience are you hoping to gain during your apprenticeship?

I am hoping to develop a wide range of commercial and technical skills, while gaining a strong understanding of how construction projects are managed. Most importantly, I want to learn from experienced people around me who can challenge me, support my development and help me take the right steps towards becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor.

What are your ambitions for your career once you complete your apprenticeship?

Once I complete my apprenticeship, my ambition is to progress towards becoming a Senior Quantity Surveyor and eventually take responsibility for managing larger and more complex projects. I want to build on the knowledge and skills I gain during my apprenticeship and continue developing throughout my career.

What are you most looking forward to about starting your career with Buxton?

I am most looking forward to working alongside highly experienced individuals, being involved in real construction projects and continuously learning new skills. I hope the experience I gain at Buxton will give me a strong foundation that I can build on and use throughout my career.

We are delighted to have Oliver on board and look forward to supporting him as he develops his commercial knowledge, gains practical experience and progresses through his apprenticeship.
