Specialist Works Begin at Gorilla Kingdom

Buxton is currently on site at ZSL London Zoo, working on the transformation of Gorilla Kingdom.
Work on the enclosure is now well under way.
A key stage currently taking place is the installation of specialist webnetting. This high-strength stainless-steel cable system forms the enclosure boundary, creating a secure environment while remaining visually open and unobtrusive for both the animals and visitors.
Webnetting is particularly suited to complex zoological habitats. Each cable is individually fixed and carefully tensioned, forming a flexible structure that can accommodate movement while maintaining long-term durability.
The process is deliberate and precise, with close attention to sequencing, safety, and the live environment around it.
Delivering work within a busy, public zoo brings its own logistical challenges. Access and deliveries are carefully planned around opening hours, with early-morning delivery slots used to minimise disruption to visitors and daily animal routines. Movement of materials, plant, and specialist equipment is tightly managed, with clear access routes, temporary controls, and constant coordination with the Zoo’s operational teams.
The project has been designed by a team led by Pringle Richards Sharratt, with a strong focus on animal welfare, habitat quality, and how visitors move through and experience the space.
Alongside the works, the site has also hosted a work-experience visit, giving NEET young people a practical view of construction within a live public zoo, while apprentice Bradley Rackley continues to build experience on site as part of the team.
Buxton has a long-standing relationship with London Zoo, having previously completed major projects on site, including Land of the Lions, along with the nearby penguin enclosure and terrace restaurant delivered as part of that wider scheme. That experience is informing how the current works are planned and managed, with careful consideration given to the Zoo’s day-to-day operation and sustainability objectives.
