Buxton Building Contractors is proud to announce the structural completion of the new visitor gateway at Winkworth Arboretum, a project commissioned by the National Trust.

The scaffolding has been removed, revealing the building’s larch-clad exterior, which harmonises with the surrounding woodland. Designed by IPT Architects, this gateway reflects the arboretum’s natural beauty and honours Dr Wilfrid Fox’s vision of “painting with trees”.
The project, which includes a reception, indoor café, shop, and modern toilet facilities such as a Changing Places toilet, directly addresses feedback from the public consultation. A relocated car park, with electric vehicle charging points, will reduce road congestion and enhance visitor access. The facilities will enable year-round enjoyment of the arboretum, regardless of weather or season.

Buxton employed Modern Methods of Construction, including Cross Laminated Timber for the building’s frame, and incorporated renewable energy features to minimise operational carbon. These sustainable practices align with the National Trust’s long-term goals of restoration and environmental care.
Commenting on the milestone, Buxton’s team expressed their commitment to delivering a high-quality space that aligns with both the natural environment and visitor expectations. The gateway is scheduled to open in Spring 2026, marking a significant enhancement to the visitor experience at Winkworth Arboretum.
